Mobility
Mobility is important to everybody - it is the key to freedom but it is not something that disabled people can take for granted. The Specialist Advisers have particular expertise in matters relating to mobility and can advise families and young people on the most appropriate choice of aids. Young people with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus often want to learn to drive. However, there are sometimes problems which must be overcome before this can be successfully achieved.
Hydrocephalus can present problems in learning to drive as perception and memory are sometimes affected by the condition. Expensive adaptations to a car may be necessary to cater for physical disability. Some people with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus have spent a great deal of time and money learning to drive - only to find that they are not suited to this activity because of their disabilities. ASBAH encourages young people to be assessed for driving before they take expensive lessons, and to discuss with the Specialist Advisers the problems of driving, the cost of maintaining a car and their personal needs before making a decision.
It is ASBAH's aim that young people achieve the maximum possible mobility in the most appropriate and effective way.
